Case Study: Integrated Solar, Battery & Home Backup – Residential Renewable Energy System in Bromsgrove

Introduction

A homeowner in Bromsgrove partnered with M J Wallace Limited to expand and modernise their renewable energy setup.

The goal was to create a complete home energy ecosystem – combining solar generation, battery storage, EV charging, and hot water heating into one intelligent system.

By integrating these technologies, the property is now able to generate, store, and utilise its own renewable electricity more efficiently, significantly reducing dependence on the grid.

Challenge

The project required careful planning to integrate existing solar panels with a new array, while also incorporating a large battery storage system and additional energy technologies.

Key considerations included:

  • Seamlessly integrating the existing solar PV system with new panels

  • Installing a high-capacity battery storage system

  • Providing automatic home backup during power outages

  • Adding EV charging capability

  • Diverting excess solar energy to heat domestic hot water

  • Designing a system that maximises self-consumption and energy independence

Solution

M J Wallace Limited designed and installed a fully integrated renewable energy system tailored to the property’s requirements.

Scope of Work:

  • Integration of existing solar panels with a new solar PV array

  • Installation of 24kW battery storage

  • Implementation of automatic whole-home backup capability

  • Installation of a Fox EV charger

  • Installation of a solar hot water diverter to utilise excess solar energy

  • Full system integration and commissioning

The system enables the homeowner to generate electricity from solar panels, store excess energy in batteries, charge an electric vehicle, and heat hot water – all from the same renewable energy source.

Our Approach

From design to commissioning, M J Wallace Limited managed the full installation process.

Our team carefully assessed the existing system and designed an upgraded configuration that allowed the new and existing solar arrays to operate together efficiently.

The installation also required the creation of a dedicated inverter and battery setup, providing reliable energy storage and enabling automatic home backup functionality.

All equipment was installed, tested, and commissioned by our NICEIC-certified electricians, ensuring safe and compliant operation.

Benefits

☀️ Integrated Solar Generation
Existing and new solar arrays work together to maximise renewable energy production.

🔋 Battery Energy Storage
Large battery capacity allows excess solar energy to be stored and used later.

Full Home Backup
Automatic backup capability provides power to the home during grid outages.

🚗 EV Charging Integration
The homeowner can charge their electric vehicle using self-generated solar power.

🔥 Solar Hot Water Diversion
Excess solar energy is diverted to heat water rather than being exported.

🌱 Greater Energy Independence
The system dramatically reduces reliance on grid electricity.

Results

The completed installation provides the homeowner with a fully integrated renewable energy system designed for maximum efficiency and self-sufficiency.

By combining solar generation, battery storage, EV charging, and hot water heating, the property can now utilise far more of its own renewable electricity – reducing energy costs while improving resilience during grid outages.

This project demonstrates how modern renewable technologies can be combined to create a truly self-sufficient home energy system.
