Case Study: Cutting costs and carbon – A large-scale Commercial Solar & Battery Installation
In an era of rising energy costs and increasing pressure to meet sustainability targets, the leading UK independent access firm, GT Access sought a long-term solution to reduce its operational expenses and environmental impact. With a large facility consuming significant amounts of electricity, the business identified Solar PV and Battery Storage as a strategic investment. Working with M J Wallace limited, the company commissioned the design and installation of a high-capacity Commercial Solar energy system, paired with advanced battery storage.
The goal: to maximise on-site energy generation, cut reliance on the grid during peak hours, and lock in long term savings.
Challenge
The business faced several key challenges:
- Escalating energy costs, with unpredictable annual increases impacting profitability.
- A high, consistent daytime electricity demand due to continuous operations.
- A need to demonstrate meaningful carbon reduction as part of corporate sustainability goals and upcoming net zero targets.
Solution
M J Wallace limited delivered a tailored energy solution that included:
- A 173kwp solar pv system mounted across available roof space, optimised for year-round generation.
- A 384kwh battery storage system, configured to store excess daytime generation for use during peak tariff periods and overnight loads.
- A smart energy management system to monitor performance and optimise usage patterns.
- End-to-end project management including design, installation, dno liaison, and post-install support.
Results
Within the first year, the system delivered:
- An estimated £40,000 in annual energy savings.
- Over 100,000 kwh of clean electricity generated on-site.
- A reduction in grid electricity usage during business hours, regularly showing 100% self consumption estimated annual co₂ savings of over 20 tonnes.
- ROI projected at under 5 years, with 25+ years of continued benefit.
