Frequently Asked Questions
Solar PV
Are solar panels worth it?
For many homeowners and businesses, solar panels can be a worthwhile long-term investment. By generating your own electricity, you can reduce your reliance on the grid and help lower your electricity bills. When paired with battery storage, you can store more of the energy you generate for use later in the day. Every property is different, so we’ll assess your roof, energy usage and requirements before recommending the most suitable system.
Do solar panels work on cloudy days?
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunlight. While they produce the most energy on bright, sunny days, they continue generating electricity throughout the year, including during cloudy weather. Modern solar panels are designed to perform efficiently in UK conditions.
How much can I save with solar panels?
Savings vary depending on factors such as your electricity usage, roof orientation, system size and whether you have battery storage. Homes that use more of the electricity they generate generally see greater savings. During your quotation, we’ll provide an estimate based on your property and expected energy generation.
How long do solar panels last?
Most quality solar panels have a lifespan of 25 years or more. They require very little maintenance and continue producing electricity for many years, although performance naturally decreases slightly over time. Product warranties vary depending on the manufacturer.
Do I need planning permission?
In many cases, domestic solar panel installations fall under permitted development and do not require planning permission. However, listed buildings, conservation areas and some properties may be subject to additional requirements. We’ll advise you if planning permission is likely to be needed.
How long does installation take?
Most domestic solar installations are completed within one to two days. Larger or more complex systems may take longer, but we’ll provide a clear installation schedule before work begins.
Battery Storage
Do I need solar panels to have battery storage?
No. Battery storage can be installed with or without solar panels. A standalone battery can charge from the grid during off-peak periods on suitable electricity tariffs, allowing you to use stored energy when electricity prices are higher.
Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
Yes. In many cases, battery storage can be added to an existing solar PV system. We’ll assess your current installation and recommend a compatible battery solution that suits your home and energy usage.
How long do home batteries last?
Most modern home battery systems are designed to last for many years, with many manufacturers offering warranties of up to 10 years. Lifespan varies depending on the battery type, usage and charging cycles.
Can a battery power my whole house?
Battery systems can power selected appliances or, depending on the system design and battery capacity, a significant proportion of your home’s electricity usage. Backup capability during a power cut depends on the battery model and how the system has been configured.
What size battery do I need?
The right battery size depends on your electricity usage, whether you have solar panels and your future energy plans, such as purchasing an electric vehicle. We’ll recommend a battery system that’s tailored to your property’s requirements.
EV Chargers
Which EV charger is right for me?
The best EV charger depends on your vehicle, parking arrangements, electricity tariff and whether you have solar panels. We’ll recommend a charger that best suits your home, vehicle and charging habits.
Can I charge my car using solar panels?
Yes. Compatible solar EV chargers can prioritise surplus electricity generated by your solar panels when available, helping you make greater use of the renewable energy your home produces.
How long does it take to install an EV charger?
Most domestic EV charger installations can be completed within a day. Installation times vary depending on cable routes, the location of your consumer unit and whether any additional electrical work is required.
What's the difference between a tethered and untethered charger?
A tethered charger has a permanently attached charging cable, making everyday charging quick and convenient. An untethered charger uses a removable cable, offering a cleaner appearance and greater flexibility if you change vehicles in the future.
Can you install EV chargers for businesses?
Yes. We design and install commercial EV charging solutions for workplaces, offices, hotels, retail premises, apartment developments and fleet operators. Every installation is designed to suit your site’s requirements and future charging needs.
Air Conditioning
Does air conditioning also provide heating?
Yes. Modern air-to-air heat pump systems provide both cooling during warmer months and efficient heating during colder weather, making them a practical year-round solution for many homes and businesses.
Is air conditioning expensive to run?
Modern air conditioning systems are designed to be highly energy efficient. Running costs depend on factors such as room size, insulation, the temperature selected and how often the system is used. We’ll help you choose a system that’s appropriately sized for your property.
Can I get 0% VAT on air conditioning?
Certain domestic air-to-air heat pump systems that provide both heating and cooling may qualify for the Government’s temporary 0% VAT relief when supplied and installed as part of a qualifying installation. Eligibility depends on the property and the system installed, and we’ll advise you during your quotation.
Is air conditioning noisy?
Modern air conditioning systems are designed for quiet operation. Many indoor units operate at very low noise levels, making them suitable for bedrooms, home offices and living spaces.
How long does installation take?
Most single-room installations can be completed within a day, while larger or multi-room systems may require additional time. We’ll provide a clear installation schedule before work begins.
Does air conditioning need servicing?
Yes. Regular servicing helps maintain efficiency, improve air quality and support the long-term performance of your system. We recommend servicing in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.
Can I have air conditioning in a bedroom?
Absolutely. Bedrooms are one of the most popular locations for domestic air conditioning. Modern systems operate quietly while maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the night.
Electrical Services
Do you carry out EICRs?
Yes. We provide Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) for homeowners, landlords and commercial properties. An EICR assesses the condition of your electrical installation and highlights any work required to help ensure it remains safe.
Can you replace consumer units?
Yes. We replace and upgrade consumer units to meet current wiring regulations where appropriate. Our qualified electricians will assess your existing installation and recommend the most suitable solution.
Do you offer commercial electrical services?
Yes. We provide a wide range of commercial electrical services, including installations, maintenance, testing, LED lighting, EV charging, solar PV and electrical upgrades for businesses across a variety of sectors.
Which areas do you cover?
We primarily work throughout Shropshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands, while also completing larger domestic and commercial projects across the UK.
SmartCare
What is SmartCare?
SmartCare is our maintenance plan designed to help keep your solar PV, battery storage, EV charger and air conditioning systems operating safely and efficiently. Regular servicing can help identify potential issues early and support long-term performance.
How often should my system be serviced?
Servicing recommendations vary depending on the type of equipment installed. We generally recommend annual servicing for air conditioning systems and routine inspections for other technologies in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Can I join SmartCare if you didn't install my system?
In many cases, yes. We’ll first inspect your existing installation to ensure it’s suitable before recommending the most appropriate SmartCare plan.
